Print this page

The TV aspect ratio describes the relationship between the width and height of your TV screen. The aspect ratio of a standard TV is 4:3. For a widescreen TV, it is 16:9.

To set the TV aspect ratio

Roamio Series DVRs

From TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Settings > Video > Aspect Correction Mode

Premiere Series DVRs

From TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Settings > Video > TV Aspect Ratio

Series3 DVRs

From TiVo Central > Messages & Settings > Settings > Video > TV Aspect Ratio

TV aspect ratio options

  • Select 16:9 Widescreen if you have a widescreen TV.

  • IMPORTANT: You MUST choose this aspect ratio to use the HD menus on a Premiere Series DVR. You must also set the video output format to 720p or higher. For instructions, see Setting the video output format on a TiVo Roamio Series,Premiere Series, or Series3 DVR.

  • Select 4:3 Standard Screen if your standard TV does not change its display based on the signal it receives.
  • Select 4:3 Smart Screen (available on Series3 HD and HD DVRs only) if your 4:3 TV can automatically change its display based on whether it is currently receiving a high definition signal or standard definition signal. (If your TV has this feature, you probably notice that it adds bars to the top and bottom of an HD picture.)

Refer to the manual that came with your TV if you are unsure of the setting you should choose.

NOTE: You can also correct the aspect ratio of individual shows. Go to Changing a Program's Aspect Ratio on a Roamio Series, Premiere Series, or Series3 DVR for more information.
