I Just Bought a New HDTV. How Do I Connect My DVR?

Print this page

Good news! You just need to connect the new HDTV to your TiVo DVR and adjust some settings.

Part 1: Connect the new TV to the DVR

The first thing you need to do is hook up the new TV to your TiVo DVR and choose the TV input setting that matches the cabling you used, so you can see a picture on your TV screen.

Show the steps
  1. Leave your TiVo DVR plugged in and running normally.
  2. Unhook the cables between your DVR and your existing TV.
  3. Hook up your new TV to your TiVo DVR. Make sure you connect the OUT connectors on the DVR to the IN connectors on the TV.
  4. Plug in your new TV and use the TV remote to power it on.
  5. Press the TIVO button on the TiVo remote.
  6. If you do not see TiVo Central on your new TV screen, use the TV remote (not the TiVo remote) to cycle through the input source settings until you can see the TiVo Central screen. Refer to the TV owner’s manual if you need instructions.

The input source setting must match the actual cabling between your DVR and the TV. For example, if you used an HDMI cable to connect your TiVo DVR to the HDMI 2 port on your HDTV, you must select HDMI 2 as the input source.

Part 2: Reprogram the TiVo remote and customize your DVR settings

Now that you have your new TV working, you can reprogram your TiVo remote to control the new TV. If you have a high-definition TiVo DVR, you can also customize some additional settings to get the best picture and performance from your new HDTV.

Show the steps
  1. Program your TiVo remote to control the power and audio on your new TV:
  2. Roamio Series and Premiere Series DVRs

From TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Settings > Remote, CableCARD, & Devices > Remote Control Setup

    Series3 and earlier DVRs

From TiVo Central > Messages & Settings > Settings > Remote, CableCARD, & Devices > Remote Control Setup

Follow the onscreen directions to program your remote. For detailed instructions, go to How do I program my remote to control a TV/stereo?

  3. If you have a Roamio Series, Premiere Series, or Series3 DVR, select the video output format (1080i or 720p, for example) that is most compatible with your new TV:
  4. Roamio Series and Premiere Series DVRs

From TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Settings > Video > Video Output Format

    Series3 DVRs

From TiVo Central > Messages & Settings > Settings > Video > Video Output Format

Follow the onscreen directions to select a video output format. For detailed instructions, go to Setting the video output format on a TiVo Roamio Series, Premiere Series, or Series3 DVR.

If you have a Series2, Series2 DT or Series1 DVR, your DVR will automatically use the 480i standard definition video output setting.

  5. If you have a Roamio Series, Premiere Series, or Series3 DVR, select the aspect ratio of the video image (ratio of width to height) to match the dimensions of your new TV:
  6. Roamio Series and Premiere Series DVRs

From TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Settings > Video > TV Aspect Ratio

    Series3 DVRs
