I turned off Closed Captioning, but it is still displayed

How to enable/disable Closed Captioning

Roamio Series, Premiere Series, and Series3 DVRs

You can enable and disable Closed Captioning independently from your TV. Use one of these two methods to do so:

  • While watching a live or recorded program, press Info to display the channel banner, use the Down Arrow button to highlight CC and then press Select. Closed Captioning will be displayed using your current settings.
  • Or, you can adjust closed captioning settings through the TiVo menus:

From TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Settings > Display > Closed Captioning

Both methods can be used interchangeably.

TiVo Series2 boxes

TiVo Series2 boxes do not have built-in Closed Captioning, but will record Closed Captioning that is enabled through the TV.

For instructions, please refer to your television manufacturer.

How to customize Closed Captioning

TiVo DVRs offer several options to customize the appearance and improve the readability of Closed Captioning text.

NOTE: Analog cable and satellite channels do not support Closed Captioning customization.

To access the Closed Captioning options go to TiVo Central and then to Messages & Settings > Settings > Displays > Closed Captioning

I changed my Closed Captioning settings, but one recording or program remains unchanged

Customized Closed Captioning settings will work for the majority of shows you watch or record, but both the broadcaster and the vendor of a show may choose to override your desired settings.

If the Closed Captioning appearance changes on a single recording or for a series, the change was made either by your cable company or the vendor of the show. TiVo cannot override these settings.

Why can’t I use Closed Captioning on Video On Demand programming?

TiVo boxes do not support most Video On Demand Closed Captioning at this time.

Closed Captioning on Hulu Plus is supported. See Hulu Plus on TiVo for more information.

Closed Captioning does not appear correctly (symbols or garbled text)

Closed Captioning signals can become garbled if the TiVo box cannot decode it properly. Try the following to fix it:

1. If the program is not required to display Closed Captioning, the broadcaster or vendor may send a signal that the TiVo box does not understand. Change to another channel or play another recording to determine if this is the issue.

NOTE: View the Federal Communications Commission webpage for programs that do not have to provide Closed Captioning.

2. Press the PAUSE or VOLUME UP button. If this is a problem with the TV's Closed Caption settings, pausing or adjusting the volume will make the Closed Captioning box disappear momentarily.

3. Turn Closed Captioning off or set it to None (Premiere series boxes only), wait for it to clear, and turn it back on. If it does not clear, see I turned off Closed Captioning, but it is still displayed for steps on how to clear the text.

4. Try a different Closed Captioning setting.

Your Closed Captioning settings would look like this on a Series4 box:
Set Standard Captions to: CC1
Set DTVCC to: NONE

Your Closed Captioning settings would look like this on a Series3 box:
Set Standard Captions to: CC1
Set DTVCC to: DTVCC6

5. Powercycle your TiVo box.

6. If the problem persists, please contact TiVo Customer Support for assistance.

When watching LiveTV or a recorded program, Closed Captioning won’t turn on using the INFO button

NOTE: TiVo Series2 boxes do not have built-in Closed Captioning, but will record Closed Captioning that is enabled through the TV.

If you cannot turn on Closed Captioning through the INFO button when using a Roamio Series, Premiere Series, or Series3 DVR, try the following:

1. Change to another channel or play another recording. If other programs or recordings allow you to turn on Closed Captioning, your program may not be required to display Closed Captioning.

NOTE: View the Federal Communications Commission webpage for programs that are not required to display Closed Captioning.

Remember! Commercials and infomercials are typically not required to provide Closed Captioning.

2. Change the standard and/or the digital caption type. For more information regarding standard and digital captions, see How to customize Closed Captioning.

3. Powercycle your TiVo box.

4. If the problem persists, please contact TiVo Customer Support for assistance.

I turned off Closed Captioning, but it is still displayed

Sometimes when you’re watching LiveTV or a recording, Closed Captioning will stay on. Try the following to clear it from the screen:

1. The text may not disappear right away. Please wait a few moments.

2. Press the PAUSE or VOLUME UP button. If this is a problem with the TV's Closed Caption settings, pausing or adjusting the volume will make the box disappear momentarily.

3. Is this happening on a recording or on LiveTV?

Recording: Stop the recording and start it again.
Live TV: Press the TiVo button to enter TiVo Central, and then press Live TV. Do not worry about missing your show - you can use the rewind feature to go back to where you left!

4. Try a different Closed Captioning setting.

5. Turn on Closed Captioning, wait for a commercial that does not support Closed Captioning, and then turn it off.

6. If the issue persists, powercycle your TiVo box.

7. If the Closed Captioning text does not clear, contact TiVo Customer Support.
