TiVo Stream lets you stream live or recorded TV from your 4-tuner Roamio DVR or Premiere Series DVR to your Android or iOS mobile devices. It also lets you transfer recordings onto your iOS devices to take on the road and enjoy when you’re not connected to the Internet.

NOTE: The Roamio Plus and Pro models have built-in streaming capability. They do not require the use of a TiVo Stream.

What is TiVo Stream?

TiVo Stream seamlessly delivers content stored on any 4-tuner TiVo Roamio or Premiere Series DVR to mobile devices such as iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. Even when you’re out of the house, you can tap into your home DVR and stream shows to your devices. TiVo Stream allows for simultaneous streaming of content to as many as four devices around the home. It also lets you download shows to your iOS devices for viewing out of the home.

How is TiVo Stream different from other streaming devices?

Unlike other streaming devices on the market, TiVo Stream is the first device to enable the streaming or downloading of recorded shows to multiple portable devices around the home without interrupting what is playing on the television. The power of TiVo Stream also lets you transfer shows to your mobile device for viewing on the go, adding convenience and flexibility to the TiVo experience.

NOTE: TiVo Stream lets your 4-Tuner Roamio or any Premiere Series DVR take advantage of out-of-home streaming.

Do I need a TiVo Stream for each Roamio or Premiere DVR that I have in my home?

No, one TiVo Stream can support up to four simultaneous streams.

What are the technical requirements for TiVo Stream?

In order to use TiVo Stream you must:

  • Own a Roamio Series or Premiere Series DVR running software version 20.2.1 or later.
  • Both the TiVo Stream and the DVR you wish to use with it must be connected to either an Ethernet or MoCA network.

    NOTE: TiVo Stream does NOT support the following network types: wireless, Ethernet over Power, dial-up (phone), crossover network, or a business network.

  • Wireless router for connecting to your mobile devices
  • A supported mobile device. Refer to tivo.com/stream for currently supported devices.

What comes with a TiVo Stream?

To what devices can I stream live and recorded TiVo content from TiVo Stream?

You can access content on your DVR with an iPad, iPhone or iPhone touch running iOS 5.1 or later. You can also stream with most Android devices running 4.1 or above with a non-Intel or AMD chipset.

Can I watch a show on my mobile device while I am recording it on a TiVo DVR?

Yes, you can watch a show on a mobile device as it is recording.

Can I watch LiveTV on my mobile device while watching another program on the TV?

You can watch close-to-live TV by streaming a show that is currently recording. The Record and Watch feature lets you record a show and begin streaming it immediately to your mobile device in one step.

How many shows can I stream with TiVo Stream?

With the right setup, you can stream up to four shows simultaneously to four mobile devices in your home. Let's break that down further:

With a TiVo Stream and one Roamio Series or Premiere Series DVR, you can achieve a maximum of three streams.

If you have more than one Roamio Series or Premiere Series DVR set up on your account, you can use your TiVo Stream to achieve the maximum of four streams.

Being able to stream four shows simultaneously also depends on the bitrate of the source recordings. For example, you might have difficulty streaming four high-bitrate HD programs at the same time.

NOTE: TiVo Stream can only support one out-of-home stream at a time. See out-of-home streamingfor more details.

Can I watch my TiVo recordings on my iPad outside the home?

TiVo Stream enables out-of-home streaming for all Premiere Series and Roamio Series DVRs.

In addition, TiVo Stream can download recordings to your network-connected iOS device in the home so that you can take your shows with you without out-of-home streaming.

Can I download any show or content to a mobile device or will some be copyright protected?

You can stream any TiVo recording within the home, including regular and premium content. Some programs, such as premium content, may be marked as "copy once" and therefore cannot be downloaded to the mobile device.

Will there be parental controls?

No. Currently, the TiVo Stream does not recognize the TiVo DVR's parental controls.

Will TiVo Stream replace TiVo Desktop?

No. There are no plans to remove TiVo Desktop functionality, and it will continue to be an option for transferring programs to PCs and mobile devices.


Installation

Where to Place the TiVo Stream

To ensure peak performance, the optimal location for your TiVo Stream is on a hard surface, away from any heat sources (for example, stoves, heat registers, or radiators). DO NOT place the TiVo Stream on a bed, sofa, rug, or similar surface, as you might inadvertently block the Stream's vents and cause overheating.

Activate/Deactivate the TiVo Stream

You can activate and deactivate your TiVo Stream using My Account, or follow the instructions below.

Activating a retail TiVo Stream

Use the following steps to activate a TiVo Stream:

  1. Sign in to your account on http://www.tivo.com/mma.
  2. Once logged in, select My TiVo > My Account > Activate a TiVo device.
  3. Enter the TiVo Stream TiVo Service Number. This number is located on the bottom of your TiVo Stream.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. A Thumbs Up and the following message should display: You have activated your TiVo Stream. Your TiVo Stream will now appear on your online account under Active TiVo devices.

Deactivating a TiVo Stream

Use the following steps to deactivate your TiVo Stream and remove it from your TiVo account:

  1. Sign in to your account on http://www.tivo.com/mma.
  2. Once logged in, select My TiVo > My Account.
  3. Find your TiVo Stream under Active TiVo Devices.
  4. On the TiVo Stream you would like to unlink from your account, click Deactivate this device.
  5. Once unlinked, the TiVo Stream will no longer appear on your online account under Active TiVo devices, and you will see a Thumbs Up and the message You have deactivated your TiVo Stream.

How do I set up my TiVo Stream?

Use the steps below to set up your TiVo Stream for watching Live TV and downloading video to your iOS device.

Get ready to connect your TiVo Stream

  1. Write down your TiVo Stream's TiVo Service Number (TSN).

    You may need this number during the set up process, or if you contact TiVo Customer Support. You can find the TSN on the bottom of the device.

  2. On your iPad or other mobile device, download or update the TiVo App.

    To stream or download shows from your Roamio Series or Premiere Series DVR, you will need the latest version of the TiVo App. If you do not already have the TiVo App, download it from the App Store and install it on your device now. If you already have the TiVo App, make sure it is up to date (with no updates pending).

Connect the TiVo Stream to your network

  1. Check your DVR's network connection. Verify that you have connected your DVR to your home network using either a wired Ethernet or MoCA connection.

    Wired Ethernet: Connect your Roamio Series or Premiere Series DVR to an open port on your router or to an Ethernet jack in your wall using an Ethernet cable.

    MoCA: To use a MoCA connection, you must have MoCA enabled in your home. Then, connect the coaxial cable coming from the wall to the CABLE/MoCA port on the back of the DVR. For more information on MoCA, see tivo.com/moca.

  2. Connect your TiVo Stream to your router and plug it in.

    IMPORTANT: If you need to set up more than one TiVo Stream, you must connect only ONE TiVo Stream and complete all setup instructions before connecting any additional devices.

    1. Connect your TiVo Stream to an open port on your router using an Ethernet cable.
    2. Connect the power cord from the back of the Stream to a power source.
    3. Wait for the LED on the back of the Stream to turn solid white. This should take less than 10 minutes.

Connect the TiVo Stream to the TiVo App on your iOS or Android device.

Finish setting up the TiVo Stream by connecting it to your iOS or Android device.

  1. Ensure that you have downloaded and set up the most up-to-date TiVo App for iOS and Android. For assistance, see How to use the TiVo App.
  2. Launch the TiVo App on your mobile device.
  3. Step 1: Checking software version. The TiVo App will locate the TiVo Stream and check its software version. This can take up to 3 minutes.

    NOTE: If the TiVo App does not automatically detect the TiVo Stream and begin Step 1, click the gear (settings) icon and then TiVo Stream Setup.

    If the TiVo Stream needs a firmware update, the TiVo App will display a no symbol (a circle with line through it) next to Step 1, and the firmware update will begin. While this is happening, be aware that:

    • This process can take up to 20 minutes.
    • We recommend that you plug your mobile device into a power source.
    • Allow the process to complete. If you interrupt it, it will begin at Step 1 the next time you go to the TiVo Stream menu in Settings.
    • This process will restart the TiVo Stream a minimum of 2 times. Do not interrupt this process.

    If the TiVo Stream finds it does not need a firmware update, it will proceed to the next setup step and you can skip to Step 4: Testing your network for streaming.

    IMPORTANT: If your TiVo Stream doesn't complete Step 1: Checking software version within 20 minutes, unplug the TiVo Stream and start setup again. If you still are unable to advance past Step 1, contact TiVo Customer Support.

  4. Step 2: Checking activation status verifies that you have activated the TiVo Stream. If the TiVo App detects that you have not activated the TiVo Stream, the setup will pause and you will need to activate your TiVo Stream. This step can take up to 10 minutes.
  5. Step 3: Linking TiVo Stream to your DVR searches for your DVR on your network and connects with it. If there is an issue, follow the onscreen instructions to resolve it.
  6. Step 4: Testing your network for streaming runs a test on a recorded program from the DVR to make sure your network is compatible with the requirements of the TiVo Stream. If something is not working correctly, follow the onscreen instructions. Testing the network can take 2-3 minutes.
  7. You are now ready to stream! Click Done or See tutorial for more information on using your TiVo Stream.
