Home Network and Account Requirements

Use the Whole Home Advanced Help screen to make sure the following requirements are satisfied:

  • All TiVo devices must be on the same TiVo account.
  • Your TiVo account must be activated and in good standing.
  • A maximum of 12 TiVo devices per account, including TiVo Mini, can share programming.
  • The host DVR must be a Roamio Series DVR or a 4-tuner TiVo Premiere Series DVR running software 20.2.2 or above.
  • TiVo Mini must be on the same network and subnet as the host DVR.
  • TiVo Mini, the host DVR, and all other DVRs you want to use with TiVo Mini must connect to the home router using a high-bandwidth Ethernet or MoCA connection. For ease of setup and maintenance, TiVo recommends that you use the same type of connection across all devices on your network.

IMPORTANT: TiVo Mini does not support wireless connections and cannot interact with DVRs in your home that are on a wireless connection.

How to set up TiVo Mini

Step One: Activate your TiVo Mini

The TiVo service is required to use your TiVo Mini. Some TiVo boxes are sold with a TiVo service plan. If yours was not, activate the TiVo service at tivo.com/activate or contact TiVo Customer Support. You'll need your TiVo Service Number. You can find it on the bottom of the device.

Once you have activated your service, wait 15 minutes before moving on to Step Two.

Step Two: Choose your network type and configure your host DVR and Mini

DVR connected by Ethernet, Mini connected by Ethernet
  1. Ensure that your DVR's connection type is set up for Ethernet by going to:
  2. From TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Settings > Network

    • If your connection type is not Ethernet, select Change connection type and follow the on-screen instructions to select Ethernet. Your DVR will connect to the TiVo Service. When the connection is complete, proceed to the next step.
    • If your connection type is Ethernet, select Connect to the TiVo Service now. When the connection is complete, proceed to the next step.
  3. Connect TiVo Mini to the TV.
    • For high-definition TV, connect the HDMI cable (included in the package) between TiVo Mini and the TV.
    • For other TV types, use component and/or composite breakout cables (available in the TiVo Store).
  4. Connect TiVo Mini to an Ethernet jack in the wall (or, if available, directly to an open port on your router) using an Ethernet cable.
  5. Plug in the TiVo Mini power cord.
  6. Turn on the TV that you will be using your TiVo Mini with
  7. Make sure you have a direct line of sight between TiVo Mini and your TiVo remote control. If you plan to put TiVo Mini in a cabinet or other enclosed area, you will need a TiVo IR Adapter.
    • Click here to order a TiVo IR Adapter from our website.
    • Click here for TiVo IR Adapter setup instructions.
  8. Wait for the Welcome! screen to display. When instructed to do so, press SELECT on the TiVo remote to begin the setup process.
  9. The next screen presents TiVo's service terms; select Agree to continue.
  10. NOTE: You must agree to the terms of service to complete Guided Setup.

  11. The next screen asks if you want to change video formats. There are two options:

    • Keep automatic settings: This is the typical choice. TiVo Mini will select video formats according to the settings it discovers on the television.
    • Change settings: Select this option if you know which resolutions your television supports and prefer to set the video formats manually.
  12. You will then see the Getting Setup Info screen, which will go through a series of steps to connect to the TiVo service to download program guide and lineup information. At the end of these steps, press the SELECT button to continue.

  13. The next step of Guided Setup will instruct you to Name This TiVo Box. Choose a name from the list or enter a unique name.

NOTE: Do not use special characters (e.g., symbols, language characters) when naming TiVo devices. Special characters can interfere with the device's visibility on the network and/or cause an error when trying to access the device.

  14. The next screen will prompt you to connect TiVo Mini to a compatible host DVR.

NOTE: If TiVo Mini only detects one compatible host DVR, it will automatically select it and you will not see this screen.

  15. That's it! Press the TiVo button on the remote to go to TiVo Central.
DVR connected by Ethernet, Mini has coax only (You must create a MoCA network)

First, determine whether or not your modem and/or router are already set up for MoCA. Some internet providers supply their customers with equipment that is MoCA-enabled out of the box. If you aren't sure, call your internet provider for information about your equipment. Alternately, you can simply change your DVR's connection type to MoCA and see if it works-if it does, you already have a MoCA network.

I want to use my TiVo DVR to create a MoCA network

You can create a MoCA network with any of these DVRs:

  • Roamio Plus
  • Roamio Pro
  • Premiere 4
  • Premiere XL4

If you don't have Ethernet access in the location where you will be using your Mini, you can use your Roamio Plus/Pro or Premiere 4/XL4 to create a MoCA network. Your TiVo Mini will then be able to stream from your DVR using only a coax connection, as shown below:

  1. Ensure that your DVR is connected both with Ethernet and a coax cable.
  2. NOTE: Although the illustration shows the DVR and router next to each other, they can be in different locations as long as both are connected to the network via Ethernet.

  3. Ensure that your DVR's connection type is set up to create a MoCA network by going to:
  4. From TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Settings > Network

    • If your connection type is not Ethernet + MoCA, select Change connection type and follow the on-screen instructions to create a MoCA network. Your DVR will connect to the TiVo Service. When the connection is complete, proceed to the next step.
    • If your connection type is Ethernet + MoCA, select Connect to the TiVo Service now. When the connection is complete, proceed to the next step.
  5. Connect TiVo Mini to the TV.
    • For high-definition TV, connect the HDMI cable (included in the package) between TiVo Mini and the TV.
    • For other TV types, use component and/or composite breakout cables (available in the TiVo Store).
  6. Connect TiVo Mini to a coax jack in the wall using a coax cable.
  7. Plug in the TiVo Mini power cord.
  8. Turn on the TV that you will be using your TiVo Mini with
  10. Wait for the Welcome! screen to display. When instructed to do so, press SELECT on the TiVo remote to begin the setup process.
  11. The next screen presents TiVo's service terms; select Agree to continue.

At the end of these steps, press the SELECT button to continue. Remember to choose MoCA as your connection type when prompted.

  16. The next screen will prompt you to connect TiVo Mini to a compatible host DVR.

NOTE: If TiVo Mini only detects one compatible host DVR, it will automatically select it and you will not see this screen.

  17. That's it! Press the TiVo button on the remote to go to TiVo Central.
I don't want to use my DVR to create a MoCA network

If you don't have an active MoCA network, you will need a MoCA Network Adapter to create one:

IMPORTANT: You will need additional MoCA Network Adapters for each non-MoCA device you want on the network.

  1. If your router is MoCA enabled, see I want to connect my TiVo Mini to an existing MoCA network.
  2. If your router is NOT MoCA enabled, you need to set up a MoCA Network adapter with your modem and router (Office, in the above illustration).
  1. Print a copy of these instructions-you will be unplugging your internet temporarily, and will not be able to see this page.
  2. Unplug the power from your modem and router.
  3. Disconnect the coax cable from your cable modem's Cable In port and connect it to the MoCA Network Adapter's Coax In port. Optional: For a more secure and better-performing MoCA network, consider installing a MoCA POE Filter.
  4. Connect another coax cable from the MoCA network adapter's TV/STB Out port to the cable modem's Cable In port.
  5. Connect an Ethernet cable between the MoCA Network Adapter's Ethernet port and any available LAN (sometimes called Ethernet Out or Downlink) port on your router.
  6. Connect an Ethernet cable between the router's WAN (sometimes called Ethernet In or Uplink) port and the Ethernet port on the cable modem (if you didn't disconnect this cable previously, it should already be connected correctly).
  7. Connect the power cords to the MoCA network adapter, router, and cable modem.
  1. Ensure that your DVR's connection type is set up to use a MoCA network by going to:
  2. From TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Settings > Network

    • If your connection type is not MoCA, select Change connection type and follow the on-screen instructions to use MoCA. Your DVR will connect to the TiVo Service. When the connection is complete, proceed to the next step.
    • If your connection type is MoCA, select Connect to the TiVo Service now. When the connection is complete, proceed to the next step.
  3. Connect TiVo Mini to the TV.

How to use TiVo Mini

How do I watch Live TV from the host DVR on TiVo Mini?

On the TiVo remote, press the Live TV button. All Live TV functions are the same, but channel changing will be slower as TiVo Mini will need to buffer the video before it begins playing.

How do I watch recorded content from the host DVR or other DVRs on TiVo Mini?

You can stream recorded content to TiVo Mini from not only your host DVR, but from any other compatible DVR on the same account and network.

To watch recorded shows from a Roamio Series or Premiere Series DVR:

How do I remotely schedule a recording on the host DVR from TiVo Mini?

All normal TiVo recording options are available on TiVo Mini.

IMPORTANT: When recording Live TV, TiVo Mini will not record your live cache/buffer. For example, if you've been watching a show for 10 minutes and then hit the RECORD button, it will not record those last 10 minutes, but start recording from the present time.

How do I use TiVo Thumb Ratings with TiVo Mini?

Use the THUMBS UP and THUMBS DOWN buttons on the TiVo remote to rate shows through TiVo Mini. The Thumb Ratings will apply to the host DVR, not TiVo Mini.
