Amazon Instant Video is currently available within the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. Amazon is not available in Puerto Rico, Guam or any other U.S. territory.
- What do I need to get started?
To download Amazon Instant Video videos to your DVR, your TiVo account and Amazon.com account must be linked. All DVRs on your TiVo account share a personal identification number (PIN) used to order videos, which you will set when you link your accounts. Your Amazon.com account must be set up for digital payment.
If you have trouble, please see Amazon Instant Video Linking Issues.
- What is the difference between rental and purchase?
Rented videos from Amazon Instant Video can be stored on your DVR for 30 days. Once you have started viewing a rented video, you will have a limited time (typically 24 hours) to watch the video before your viewing period expires and the video is deleted from your DVR.
Purchased videos from Amazon Instant Video can be stored on up to 2 TiVo DVRs or PCs at any one time and can be viewed as often as you wish over an indefinite period. The purchased videos may not be transferred to another device or person; however, they are generally available for re-download from Amazon Instant Video’s Your Video Library.
For complete usage terms, please see the Amazon.com Terms and Conditions.
- Where will I see the bill?
Amazon Instant Video purchases are charged to your Amazon.com account.
- What video quality can I expect?
Amazon Instant Video videos watched on a TiVo DVR are of better quality than videos recorded at the Best Quality setting on a TiVo Series2 DVR.
If you have an HD TiVo box, you can also download HD quality videos.
- What is Account Linking?
Please see Amazon Instant Video - Linking Issues.
- Which TiVo DVRs are compatible with Amazon Instant Video?
Amazon video downloads are compatible with all broadband connected TiVo Series2, Series3, and Premiere series boxes.
Amazon video downloads are not available to DIRECTV for TiVo subscribers or Series1 TiVo DVRs.
- Will I need to enter my PIN each time I purchase or rent a video?
Yes. Your PIN will allow you to browse, purchase and download videos to your TiVo DVR. Your PIN is also used to help protect you from unauthorized purchases made on your Amazon Instant Video or TiVo accounts.
- What if I forget my PIN?
Select the “I forgot my PIN” option listed on the PIN-entry screen. This will lead you through a simple process to renew your PIN.
You’ll need to enter the email address and password you use for your Amazon account, so have them handy. To update your PIN or 1-Click Payment Method, follow the instructions at Amazon.com.
- Will I be required to enter additional passwords each time I want to purchase or rent a video?
No. Once you've opened and linked your accounts, you will only need to enter your PIN to make purchases.
- What if I accidentally purchase or rent a video more than once?
Amazon is designed to ignore multiple attempts within a one-minute span of time. This should prevent accidental multiple purchases from occurring. However, if you accidentally purchase a video more than once, contact Amazon Customer Support immediately.
- How do I confirm a video purchase or rental?
You will immediately receive an order confirmation by email, but you can also verify all purchases, your order history and current downloads by going to Your Media Library.
To verify download status, select the “Downloads” tab at the top of the screen and the status of your recent purchase will be shown.
Please note that due to licensing restrictions certain new release movies are unavailable for re-download for an unspecified period of time starting 90 days after their release date. While these movies can be viewed as often as you like during this window, they cannot be re-downloaded from Your Media Library at Amazon.com.
- Can I download a single video from Amazon to multiple TiVo DVRs?
Yes. Each purchase may be downloaded to two additional TiVo DVRs on your linked account. Downloading to multiple TiVo DVRs requires that you first delete the program from at least one of the original TiVo DVRs. Please note that rented videos are not available for multiple downloads.
- Can I download videos to TiVo DVRs other than my own?
Movies and programs purchased at Amazon may only be downloaded to the TiVo DVRs listed on your linked TiVo/Amazon account.
- Can I watch the video while it is downloading to my TiVo DVR?
Yes. Progressive download is available to all TiVo DVRs. Videos are available for viewing within about 15 minutes of ordering. Viewing availability may vary, depending on internet connection and home networking speeds. Simply go to Now Playing (or My shows on Premiere series boxes using TiVo with HD menus), select your video and agree to begin playback.
WARNING: The rental period begins immediately upon playback. Depending on your internet connection and how much of the video has already downloaded, you may experience pauses during progressive download.
- Will I be able to use TiVo’s Home Media features with my Amazon videos?
No. You won’t be able to use the TiVoToGo or Multi-Room Viewing features with rented Amazon videos. Nor can you burn Amazon videos to a DVD. However, you can download your purchased videos to multiple TiVo DVRs.
- Are High Definition (HD) videos available for download to my HD DVR?
Yes, HD videos are available from Amazon Instant Video for your HD TiVo DVR (Series3 and Premiere series boxes).
To select HD movies and television shows from your TiVo DVR, look for s followed by the [HD] symbol.
TiVo with HD menus: From TiVo Central go to Find TV, Movies, & Videos > Amazon Instant Video.
TiVo with SD menus: From TiVo Central go to Video On Demand > Amazon Instant Video.
Video download times will vary due to connection speed, network activity, and the size of the video. The High Definition version of a video may take up to four times longer to download than the Standard Definition version.
NOTE: Be aware that while you may be able to download HD programs to your Series2, you will not be able to play these programs.
- Do Amazon Instant Video videos offer closed captioning?
Closed captioning is not supported at this time.
- If I delete my Amazon video from my TiVo DVR, is it gone forever?
No. Amazon stores all of your purchased videos in Your Media Library for re-download, so your videos don’t have to take up unnecessary space on your TiVo DVR. You can re-download your purchased videos at anytime. However, please take note of the “Pay-TV Blackout Window”.
- What is the “Pay-TV Blackout Window”?
Due to restrictions from the video rights holders, most newly released movies will occasionally become temporarily unavailable for re-download from Your Media Library at Amazon.com - even after they’ve already been purchased. During this “Pay-TV Blackout Window” certain programs will be temporarily unavailable from the Amazon Instant Video catalog. This happens during the program’s run on a pay-cable channel. The video will be automatically replaced and made available to you through Your Media Library at Amazon.com once the “Pay-TV Blackout Window” has ended.
- I’ve deleted a video from my TiVo DVR but according to my Amazon account, my license has not been restored. What should I do?
Start by checking your “Recently Deleted” folder. If the video is there, delete it. You may need to wait up to five minutes before the license is made available. Be sure your DVR’s broadband connection is working. If these steps do not restore your license, contact Amazon Customer Support and ask them to confirm and clear so that it reflects accurately in your account.
