The Amazon Instant Video app for TiVo lets you rent or purchase movies and TV shows and watch them on your TiVo DVR.

Compatibility

Amazon Instant Video is currently available within the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. Amazon Instant Video is not available in Puerto Rico, Guam, or any other U.S. territory.

Amazon Instant Video is compatible with the following TiVo devices:

  • Roamio Series DVRs
  • TiVo Mini
  • Premiere Series DVRs using HD menus (manufactured prior to January 1, 2014-see "Premiere Compatibility" below for details)
  • Series3/HD/HD XL
  • Series2

IMPORTANT: Premiere Compatibility

Regulatory changes made by the FCC on January 1, 2014, made Amazon Instant Video incompatible with Premiere Series DVRs manufactured after that date. Additionally, Premieres running standard-definition menus (SDUI) are unable to use the app:

To see if your Premiere is compatible with Amazon Instant Video, check the manufacture date of your DVR. You can find this date on a sticker on the back of the DVR.

  • If the DVR was manufactured before January 1, 2014, it is compatible with Amazon Instant Video.
  • If the DVR was manufactured on or after January 1, 2014, it is not compatible with Amazon Instant Video. While we work with Amazon to resolve this issue, please take advantage of our other Video on Demand apps.

    NOTE: When a DVR is factory-renewed, the manufacture date is changed to reflect the factory-renewed date (not the original manufacture date). So, some DVRs might have a manufacture date on or after January 1, 2014 and still have the Amazon launch point.

HD Menus Required

Amazon Instant Video will only work on your Premiere Series DVR when your DVR is using HD menus (HDUI). If you don't see the Amazon launch point, switch to the HDUI:

From TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Settings > Displays > Choose TiVo Menus > TiVo with HD Menus (Widescreen)


Getting Started

To use Amazon Instant Video on TiVo, your TiVo account and Amazon.com account must be linked. All DVRs on your TiVo account share a personal identification number (PIN), which you will use to order videos. You also need to set your amazon.com account to accept digital payment.

IMPORTANT: You can use only one Amazon account per TiVo account.

What is the difference between Amazon Instant Video on Roamio and other TiVo devices?

Depending on the TiVo platform you are using, your Amazon Instant Video application has different capabilities and features. With software version 20.4.5, Roamio Series DVRs and TiVo Mini feature an improved Amazon Instant Video experience that not only lets you stream content to your device with up to 1080p video quality, but also offers access to your Amazon Prime videos!

Legacy (previous) versions of Amazon Instant Video are not compatible with streaming or Amazon Prime. If you have a Premiere Series or earlier DVR, the TiVo Amazon Instant Video experience gives you access to the complete Amazon Instant Video library. Your selections will be downloaded to My Shows for viewing.

I have updated my Amazon app to the new version. Can I still view content purchased through the old version?

Yes. All of the content you previously purchased and downloaded will be available as streamed content in the new app.

Where can I find a list of my registered devices at amazon.com?

Log into your Amazon account, then click on Departments > Unlimited Instant Videos > Amazon Instant Video > Settings > Registered Devices, or if using a web browser, go to https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/settings.

What is the difference between rental and purchase?

Rented videos from Amazon Instant Video are available for you to start viewing for 30 days after you rent them. Once you have started viewing a rented video, you will have a limited time (typically 24 hours) to finish watching the video before your viewing period expires and the video is no longer available. (On Premiere and earlier DVRs, the video will be deleted from your DVR and Your Video Library.)

Purchased videos from Amazon Instant Video (as well as Amazon Prime selections) can be viewed as often as you wish with no time restriction. (If you have a Premiere or earlier DVR, you can store purchased videos on up to 2 TiVo DVRs or PCs at one time. You can't transfer the purchased videos to another device or person; however, they are generally available for re-download from Your Video Library at Amazon.com.)

Will I need to enter my PIN each time I purchase or rent a video?

Yes. Your PIN will allow you to browse, purchase, stream, and download videos to your TiVo DVR. Your PIN is also used to help protect you from unauthorized purchases made on your Amazon Instant Video or TiVo accounts.

What If I forget my PIN?

Select the "I forgot my PIN" option listed on the PIN entry screen. You'll need to enter the email address and password you use for your Amazon account.

To update your PIN or 1-Click Payment method, go to Amazon.com and click the Edit purchase PIN & payment settings button.

Will I be required to enter additional passwords each time I purchase or rent a video?

No. Once you've linked your accounts, you will only need your PIN to order videos.

Are high-definition videos available from Amazon?

Yes, with two exceptions:

  1. If you have a Premiere or earlier TiVo DVR, HD movies must be downloaded from your DVR-you cannot download them from the Amazon.com webpage. HD television shows can be downloaded from both the webpage and your TiVo DVR.
  2. Series2 DVRs are unable to play HD titles. Even if you are able to download them to the Series2 DVR, you will not be able to play them.

How do I confirm a video purchase or rental?

You will immediately receive an order confirmation email, but you can also verify all purchases, your order history, and current downloads by going to Your Video Library at Amazon.com.

(Premiere and earlier DVRs only) Please note that due to licensing restrictions, certain new release movies are unavailable for re-download for an unspecified period of time starting 90 days after their release date. These movies can be viewed as often as you like during this window, but they cannot be re-downloaded from Your Video Library.

What if I accidentally purchase or rent a video more than once?

Amazon Instant Video ignores multiple attempts within a one-minute span of time. This shoule prevent accidental multiple purchases from occurring. However, if you accidentally purchase a video more than once, contact Amazon Customer Support immediately.

Can I download a single video from Amazon to multiple TiVo DVRs? (Premiere and earlier DVRs)

Yes. Each purchase may be downloaded to two TiVo DVRs on your linked account. Downloading to additional DVRs requires that you first delete the program from one of the original DVRs. Please note that rented videos are not available for multiple downloads.

You can also use your PC to transfer purchased (not rental) videos between DVRs:

  1. Go to Your Video Library at Amazon.com.
  2. Click the video you would like to transfer.
  3. Click Download Licenses.
  4. Select the TiVo DVR you want to transfer the video to.
  5. Click Download.

Can I download videos to TiVo DVRs other than my own? (Premiere and earlier DVRs)

No. Movies and programs purchased at Amazon.com may be downloaded only to the TiVo DVRs listed on your linked TiVo/Amazon accounts.

Do Amazon Instant Video videos offer closed captioning?

The current version of the Amazon Instant Video app for TiVo supports closed captioning. However, if you have a Premiere or earlier DVR, closed captioning is not available at this time.

(Premiere and earlier DVRs) If I delete my Amazon video from my TiVo DVR, is it gone forever?

No. Amazon stores all of your purchased videos in Your Video Library for re-download. However, please take note of the Pay-TV Blackout Window.

What is the Pay-TV Blackout Window?

Due to restrictions from the video rights holders, most newly released movies will occasionally become temporarily unavailable for re-download from Your Video Library-even after you have already been purchased the video.

During this "Pay-TV Blackout Window," certain programs will be temporarily unavailable from the Amazon Instant Video catalog and Your Video Library. This happens during the program’s run on a pay-cable channel.

Amazon will automatically replace and make the video available to you through Your Video Library once the "Pay-TV Blackout Window" has ended.

(Premiere and earlier DVRs) Is there a limit to how much I can download to my TiVo DVR?

The amount of space remaining on your TiVo DVR at the time of each Amazon Instant Video download determines how much you can download. You can make room on your TiVo DVR by deleting programs from your My Shows (or Now Playing List).

Your TiVo DVR downloads purchased Amazon Instant Videos at the best quality available. If you have reached the storage capacity of your TiVo, you may want to consider adding an Expander for additional space. Please see DVR Expander FAQfor more information.

How do I maximize the speed of my streams or downloads?

While average streaming/downloading speeds will vary, here are some key factors that are relevant:

  • Limits imposed by your internet service provider and the internet service package you have purchased
  • The type of network you are using (wired Ethernet or MoCA is always faster than wireless)
  • The length of video being downloaded
  • The physical distance between the wireless adapter and your wireless router
