Overview

Out-of-home streaming lets you stream content from your compatible TiVo device at home to your iOS device anywhere in the world! Finally, you can watch what you want—where you want to.

Installation

Follow the steps in this section to install the TiVo App on your iOS device and set up out-of-home streaming:

Check compatibility

Before installation, make sure that your DVR and iOS device are compatible with out-of-home streaming, and that your home network is functioning.

DVR model

Out-of-home streaming is available on Roamio Plus and Roamio Pro DVRs running software version 20.3.7.1a or higher. To update your TiVo software version, connect to the TiVo Service.

Out-of-Home Streaming is also available on 4-tuner Roamio DVRs and all Premiere Series DVRs running software version 20.3.7.1a or higher using the standalone TiVo Stream running software version 19.1.3b-01-6-A94 or higher.

TiVo App for iOS software version

Your iOS device must be running the TiVo App with software version 3.2 or above. For more information about installing the TiVo App on your iOS device, see TiVo App for iOS-Installation.

Network requirements

Out-of-home streaming requires a fast, reliable Internet connection between your DVR and iOS device. For the best experience, make sure your setup meets the following requirements:

Home network
  • TiVo strongly recommends that you use Ethernet or MoCA to connect your DVR to your home network. Wireless networking of any kind is by nature slower and less reliable than a wired connection, and can affect your ability to successfully stream content.
  • If you have a Roamio Plus/Pro DVR, you can use the built-in WiFi for streaming content from that DVR to a mobile device. However, this configuration will not allow you to stream content from other DVRs in your home.
Internet connection
  • TiVo recommends a high-bandwidth Internet connection, such as cable or fiber optic. DSL connections are slower and might not provide the best out-of-home streaming experience.
Network at viewing location
  • If your iOS device is connected to a network with limited bandwidth or heavy traffic, the TiVo App for iOS automatically lowers the video quality. To improve quality, select Download from the menu bar to download the recorded program or in-progress recording to your iOS device. Once a download has started, the program can be viewed.
Universal plug and play
  • For Out-of-home streaming to work, you must have Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) enabled on your home router. Refer to your router manufacturer's instructions for assistance with enabling UPnP.

Set up out-of-home streaming

To use Out-of-home streaming, you must complete the set up process using your home network. You CAN NOT set up Out-of-home streaming for the first time on an away-from-home network.

For a first-time setup (after installing the TiVo App for the first time or after resetting it from Settings > Reset application), follow these steps while on the home network:

  1. Launch the TiVo App
  2. In the Set up streaming device? dialog box, choose Start Setup
  3. Select a streaming device from the list (displayed if there is more than one device on the network)
  4. On the Streaming Setup screen, check Set up in-home streaming and Set up out-of-home streaming. Ensure the User Agreement checkbox is checked.
  5. Choose Start Setup. The streaming setup will begin. Choose Done to complete setup.

If the TiVo App has already been installed and set up, but you want to repeat the setup, follow these steps while on the home network:

  1. Launch the TiVo App
  2. Choose Settings > Setup
  3. Select a streaming device from the list (displayed if there is more than one device on the network)
  4. Choose Start Setup. The streaming setup will begin. Choose Done to complete setup.

Troubleshooting

This section presents solutions to some common issues that can hinder out-of-home streaming.

Error: "Problem playing recording" (standalone TiVo Stream only)

Some TiVo App for iOS customers have reported that they receive an error after setting up the app with a standalone TiVo Stream. The app reports that the setup successfully completed, but when streaming a program, the error "Problem playing recording" appears. This issue will be fixed soon. In the meantime, perform the following steps to resolve the issue:

  1. From TiVo Central > Settings & Messages > Settings > Network > Connect to the TiVo Service now. This will ensure that the latest version of the software is installed.
  2. In the TiVo App for iOS, restart the TiVo Stream.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, contact TiVo Customer Support

I can't stream the program that I want

First, determine whether the program you are trying to stream is already recorded on your DVR or is from Live TV. Then use the following sections to troubleshoot your issue:

I can't stream a program that I have already recorded to my DVR

Content with copy protection cannot be streamed using the Out-of-Home Streaming feature. Only non-copy-protected ("0x00—Copy freely") can be viewed. See Questions about copy protection for more information about copy-protection.

If the program you are trying to stream is not copy-protected, there might be a problem with either your home network or the out-of-home network you are connected to. To troubleshoot your home network, see General Network Troubleshooting Tips.

If your iOS device is connected to a network with limited bandwidth or heavy traffic, select Download from the menu bar to download the recorded program or in-progress recording to your iOS device. Once a download has started, the program can be viewed.

If your home network is working correctly but the away-from-home network you are using is causing issues, try moving to a different location with a stronger network connection.

IMPORTANT: Remember, you must have UPnP enabled on your router for Out-of-home streaming to work. Refer to your router manufacturer's instructions for assistance with enabling UPnP.

I can't stream Live TV

There are multiple factors that can hinder a Live TV stream. Here are the most common issues and suggested troubleshooting steps:

Not enough tuners

Streaming live TV requires a dedicated tuner from your DVR. Your DVR uses a process called Dynamic Tuner Allocation to automatically dedicate tuners for streaming to other devices. However, if all of your tuners are being used, you will not be able to stream Live TV until you manually free up a tuner.

Network issues

Out-of-home streaming relies both on your home network and the network you connect to away from home. If either network is not functioning (or working with too low a connection speed), out-of-home streaming will not function correctly.

To troubleshoot your home network, see General Network Troubleshooting Tips.

Copy protection

Content with copy protection cannot be streamed using the Out-of-Home Streaming feature. Only non-copy-protected ("0x00—Copy freely") can be viewed. See Questions about copy protection for more information about copy-protection.

I can't stream over my cellular network

Out-of-home streaming is not supported over cellular networks. However, you can download recorded programs or an in-progress recording to your iOS device. To do this, select Download from the menu bar.

I can't access other DVRs on my network

If you can't see the other devices on your network, see Multi-Room Streaming for troubleshooting tips.

NOTE: If the DVR you are using to stream content to your iOS device is connected to your home network using a WiFi connection, you won't be able to access the other DVRs in your home. Consider connecting the host DVR via a wired Ethernet or MoCA connection to solve this problem.

I want to disable out-of-home streaming

To disable out-of-home streaming, repeat the setup process for the TiVo App. See the Setup section above for instructions. Deselect Out-of-home Streaming, then select Continue.

Something is wrong with the content I am streaming

If the TiVo App is functioning correctly, but the content you are attempting to stream is missing or incorrect, verify that the DVR is recording the content correctly. This requires that you be in front of your DVR for troubleshooting.

I can't achieve full signal strength (6 dots)

Currently, the TiVo App for iOS uses a proxy server to handle transfers between your TiVo DVR and your iOS device. Soon, you will be able to connect directly to your home network-when this happens, you will be able to get all six dots. Until then, the highest attainable signal strength is five dots.

The proxy server does not affect your ability to stream or download programs.

How many streams can I run at the same time?

Out-of-home streaming can support one stream or download. Two or more streams may degrade the quality of your program due to network restrictions.

Streaming speed requirements

Minimum/maximum bitrate for streaming

Streaming Location Minimum bitrate (data transfer/time) Maximum bitrate (data transfer/time)
In-home stream (not adaptive) 2.2 Mbit/s 2.2 Mbit/s
Out-of-home stream 290 Kbit/s 1.2 Mbit/s

I don't know which download quality setting to use

Consider the bitrate and download size when choosing which download quality to use:

Remote download bitrate and download size

Quality setting Bitrate (data transfer/time) Download size/hour of video
Best 2.2 Mbit/s 1.1G
Medium 1.2 Mbit/s 640M
Basic (iPad) 800 Kbit/s 440M
Basic (iPhone) 600 Kbit/s 360M

IMPORTANT: When using a cellular network to download content, carrier data limits and/or additional fees may apply.
